Tuesday, 06 June 2006
Australian Rainbow Labor today attacked the decision of the federal government to interfere in the democratic decision making process of the ACT and strongly welcomed Shadow Attorney General Nicola Roxon's comments in support of the Stanhope government.

"The federal government has once again nailed its homophobic colours to the mast and shown to all fair-minded Australians that the coalition is as virulently opposed to equality and dignity for lesbians and gay men, and our children and families, as ever," said Rainbow Labor (NSW) spokesperson" Peter FitzPatrick.

Rainbow Labor has written to the leaders of the ALP Federal caucus to urge them to stand firm in defence of the groundbreaking ACT legislation.

Rainbow Labor Welcomes Commitment to Anti-Discrimination Bill

Rainbow Labor today welcomed Nicola Roxon's announcement of the intention of the Federal parliamentary party to introduce a private member's bill to end discrimination against gay and lesbian Australians. Rainbow Labor sees the promised bill as a concrete indication of the commitment of the ALP to our community.

Roxon's announcement accompanied her welcoming of the recent "Sea of Hearts" event organised by the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby. Nine Labor MPs from 3 states representing 4 parliaments planted hearts at the event to symbolise the ALP's continuing support for the gay and lesbian community. NSW Federal front benchers Anthony Albanese and Tanya Plibersek were joined by SA colleague Penny Wong in planting hearts on behalf of Labor federally. NSW parliamentarians Penny Sharpe, Meredith Burgman, Paul Pearce, Linda Burney and Kristina Keneally all planted hearts as did WA state MP John Hyde.
